BEC MATTHEWS UTOPIA EP LAUNCH – TOFF IN TOWN

Singer songwriter Bec Matthews debut EP, Utopia is beautiful. Melding African and western instruments and languages with the talents of many musicians it delivers a unique sound.

That sound is a completely different experience live. Part of the joy is the welcome surprise that the band is so tight, that the layers of instruments and voices come together so seamlessly it is difficult to play my favourite game of ‘what is making that sound?’ (a game further confused by a plethora of different instruments and the amazing Kora being capable of delivering a baseline and melody at the same time).

The real highlight of seeing Bec Matthews and band live though is Bec herself. Modest almost to the point of self-deprecating she leads the band with a glance here and there and clearly is as immersed as the audience in the truly fantastic sound created. When not imparting some soaring melody, her mouth settles in a small smile.

Bec’s introductions to the pieces are also priceless. Her travels to Africa (where she has learned to play many instruments) and rural Australia (where as a podiatrist she assists indigenous communities) are reflected in her songs and her insights make the music all the more enjoyable.
